Howdy, I'm Rob Long. For twenty years I've integrated commerce systems and led engineering teams.

Over a decade at PayPal managing large-scale enterprise integrations and partner-focused engineering programs. Before that, platform integrations at eBay after a decade running my own system integration agency.

2025 H2: I left a role, team and org I loved to take a working sabbatical. Big changes afoot at the intersection of enterprise architecture, ecommerce and AI. I'm hands-on with all the tools, frameworks, models, and SOTA I can find. When my experiments lead to interesting results, I capture the highlights here.

I love what I do

• At PayPal I managed $3B in enterprise integration pipeline a year. Working with very large household names with (very) complex needs.
• I've presented at conferences in twelve countries. Talks, keynotes, panels on ecommerce and payments engineering to over 25,000 partners, developers and merchants.
• I co-founded an ecommerce optimization community which grew to seventy tech partners, agencies and merchants. We optimized a billion dollars in transactions. Forrester said nice things (226% ROI for merchants).
• I've led teams of thirty engineers but love externally facing IC work: helping very large customers with very complex needs.

Beyond Work

When I'm not engineering software I engineer food. Cooking is my first and most abiding love -- having taken cooking classes in 6 countries and just missing a Food Network show (camera crew was booked to Austin, but alas Covid dashed my dreams).
